New Years Season 2009 In Japan people go to Temples and Shrines on New Years Eve to pray, buy charms, and get their read fortune for the year.  It's also a big party with many stands selling food and drinks, and even alcohol.  Sensoji, a temple nearby in Asakusa is visited by more than one hundered thousand people on New Years Eve alone.
